February 2017 Minutes

Style of the Month:

Jonathan & Susan Frantz - Red/Amber Ale

Election Results:

President - Mitch Wineman

Vice President - Mike Willis

Event Coordinator - Chris Houdesheldt

Treasurer - Anthony Simon

Scribe - Dan Nilsen

Discussed:

  • Polk City Bikes and Brew will be inviting us to pour again this year but has also discussed if we would be able to pour the night before as a fundraiser event. Discussions of the legality of pouring and charging for homebrew occurred and further follow-up will be needed. If you know someone who can help interpret the law about either ‘day memberships’ for these events or if we could collect donations in exchange for a pass into the event please let Mitch, Chris, or Dan know.

  • Educational items have been brought up with the possibility of speakers or performing our own based on getting to know some of the new hop varieties and new grain choices. This could be done by making a few ‘hop teas’ for meetings and having members sample as well as some wort samples of grains.

  • Talks of wanting to do some more pouring at events like the ARL (Animal Rescue League) that was done with the IBU occurred and club collaborations such as the Cedar Rapids (CR Beer Nuts) event were discussed. Related to this we would need to figure out how to coordinate with charities to host our own or other clubs to express interest and make sure that members have beer to serve.

  • Held discussions about a fundraiser or fun event for a wort challenge, similar to how the IBU has teamed up with Confluence Brewing occurred. The thought would be to ask breweries close to or within Ankeny before going to Des Moines (Firetrucker, New American, Mistress, or Reclaimed Rails). This will require further discussion in the club to determine if this is possible, who would sponsor, and how the pricing works with that brewery.

  • Reminder that club dues are $25 and if you have questions see Anthony for details.

 Upcoming Events:

  • Decision on taking bus to the 39th annual AHA National Homebrewers Conference – aka Homebrew Con – will need to be made soon. The event date is June 15-17, 2017 and registration opens Tuesday, March 7th, 2017. If the club had enough members interested we could share a bus with the IBU and possibly the Ames Brewers League to get the cost of a seat to about $84. See Chris or Sherri for more information.

Future Meetings:

  • March's meeting pushed back to 3/22/17 due to spring break and is being hosted at New American Brewing. March is a SMASH beer month. Bring your smash beer to explain the hop and grain selection and things you may change if you brewed this again.

  • April’s meeting will be held at Firetrucker with the style of April Fool’s. These are beers that are unique and different, they do not have a beer class on their own but would typically fall into the BJCP styles of 23 – specialty beer style (2004) or 34 B/C – Mixed-Style Beer / Experimental Beer.

  • May’s style will be a SMASH, location TBD.
